There are bread and butter races in thoroughbred horse racing. These races have the most consistent results out there, and can make great wagers. As with most wagering techniques, there are some advantages and disadvantages, but a lopsided look at the numbers and some care can help you walk away a winner.
Single Front Runners on the Dirt
Claiming races that include a single competent early pace runner are one of the surest bets in horse racing. For the best results, select dirt races that are between six furlongs and a mile. The beauty of this type of race is that claiming horses are typically consistent runners anyway. When a scenario presents itself with a single horse that is an aggressive leader, is in good condition, and is running at a track and distance that is comfortable for it, the outcome is pretty predictable.
The Drawbacks of this Approach
So, what’s the catch? The odds. You typically can´t make money on these types of races on a standard win wager because the odds are so low, some of the lowest on the program any day of the year. So, knowing which horse is likely to win, and knowing you can’t make money on betting him to win, how do you play the race? Since everyone knows what you know, you have to look at the opportunity from a different angle in order to make it work for you.
Use the Exotic Wagers to Your Advantage
Exotic wagering can be a double-edged sword. The payouts can be high, but the takeout (the track´s share) can be high too. Knowledge of a likely front running winner, even though nothing is completely sure in horse racing, can give you the edge you need to formulate an exotic wager that will pay for your trip to the track.
That unbeatable horse in the single frontrunner scenario wins often, but if he doesn’t win, he seldom places second. Since early speed and energy expenditure are essential to the way he runs the race, if something happens to upset his ability to set a large early lead, he will probably fade by the time the winner reaches the finish line.
In an exacta wager, for instance, picking the order of the first and second place finishers gives you an opportunity to benefit from the knowledge that the favored horse may well place first, but he won’t be in the running for second. Many wagerers are lazy and box their exactas, selecting the same two horses to win and place (in any order). Constructing your exacta to eliminate the favorite from a second place finish, and choosing another likely horse instead, will put you at a potentially profitable advantage.
Wagering is a bit different from handicapping. To wager well, you have to know the horses and the bettors. Sometimes a small change in strategy that sets you apart can send you home a winner.
